What Are Turntable Belts? |
|
|
Turntable Belt is one of the most essentiality for successfully operating belt-driven turntables. This belt is used to connect the motor to the platter, and make it turn, or record playing surface of the turntable. The belts used in the turntables are made of rubber and may vary in width and length by the manufacturer. Belt-driven turntables are often more inexpensive to buy than direct drive turntables because they allow for use of a cheaper motor.
The only disadvantage of the turntable belts is that, they have to be replaced in any case, if they fail to work, or become brittle or worn after years of long use, and may lead to inferior sound quality from the record player.

Follow these instructions for replacing a turntable belt:
- Remove the rubber platter mat if used in the turntable, and keep it aside.
- Lift up the platter straight, and off the center spindle to expose the turntable belt.
- Take out the original belt and check it. Mostly, a turntable belt does not slip, until it is damaged. If it is damaged, purchase a new one. You can also get replacement belts online.
- For a Two-Piece Platter Turntable
- Encircle the new turntable belt around the cylinder located underneath the platter.
- Check if the belt is working properly by turning the platter clockwise two or three rotations. It should smoothly move along the motor pulley. If it doesn't, adjust it and turn it again.
- Replace the platter and then carefully lay the rubber platter mat over it.
- Turn on the turntable and check it for correct movement.
- For a One-Piece Platter Turntable
- Encircle the new belt around the cylinder located underneath the platter.
- Replace the platter carefully as they may get damaged if it done carelessly.
- Turn the platter so the hole in it lines up with the motor pulley.
- Pull the turntable belt and loop it over the motor pulley. Position it on the pulley groove to make sure it won't slip.
- Rotate the platter clockwise to make sure the belt is firmly in the pulley grove. Moving it two or three times ensures that it's in place.
- Put the rubber turntable mat back on the platter.
- Turn on the turntable and check it for correct movement.
