Online Guide Of Turntable Cartridges

A phono cartridge is the critical part of a record turntable. It is a small electro acoustic component fitted at the front of a tone arm on a turntable. It holds the stylus or needle, vibrating as it traces the record grooves. The stylus is the needle shaped material at the end of the cantilever of the phono cartridge. The cartridge converts the vibrations into audio signals which then are amplified further up the electronic chain.

It is commonly observes that the performance potential of a record playing system is determined through the capabilities of the phono cartridge.
In all, the tonal balance, response range, clarity on musical peaks, stereo separation and imaging and freedom from noise and distortion are all affected by the quality of the phono cartridge. The selection of this first component is thus responsible to make the full enjoyment of the rest of your system.

The cartridge's stylus moves over the grooves in a vinyl record to produce a sound signal. Whether you're a DJ or just an audiophile who's manages to hang onto your record collection, selecting a quality cartridge is of utmost importance. While choosing a cartridge, the first thing to be thought of is all about your budget. If you are going for an affordable model, it is mandatory to known about the different types of stylus work. These are:

  • Spherical – The cheapest type available, such as The Stanton Cartridges.
  • Elliptical Diamond – These are acceptable and fine as they are smaller in size. The smaller the styli, the better would it fit into the grooves of the record (so as to get accuracy in sound).
  • Linear Contact (Micro Line and Other Premium Styli) – These are quite expensive, but have the best sound and are most recommended for most audiophile quality record players.
